At Mon Motors Volkswagen, no one knows your car better than we do. Our Volkswagen Approved Technicians carry out MOT testing at our five official dealerships in Bath, Bristol, Gloucester, Merthyr Tydfil, and Weston-super-Mare, using the latest diagnostic equipment to ensure your vehicle is assessed to the highest standards.

An MOT test is a legal requirement for all vehicles over three years old in the UK. It confirms that your Volkswagen meets essential safety and environmental standards, keeping you road-legal for the year ahead.

It’s important to remember that an MOT is not the same as a Volkswagen Service. While MOTs are mandatory annually once your vehicle is over three years old, servicing is not - but it is highly recommended. Regular servicing helps maintain your Volkswagen’s performance, efficiency, and long‑term value. If your MOT and service are due at the same time, you can conveniently book them together.

To support you with any repairs identified during your MOT, we're pleased to offer 0% APR finance, allowing you to spread the cost over up to nine monthly payments.

Preparing your Volkswagen for its MOT

How to prepare your Volkswagen for an MOT test

Once you’ve booked your MOT with Mon Motors Volkswagen, there are a few checks that you can complete before the test to give your Volkswagen the best chance of passing. These include:

  • Checking there’s sufficient tread (over 1.6mm) on all tyres
  • Ensuring windscreen wipers, headlamps, and signals are working
  • Testing the horn and seatbelts
  • Topping up oil, coolant and windscreen wiper fluid if necessary
  • Checking the windscreen for any cracks or chips
  • Ensuring the car is clean, especially number plates

Many MOT failures come down to minor issues that are easy to spot and fix at home. Spending a few minutes checking your vehicle could save you time and hassle later. If you notice anything that doesn’t seem right, booking a Volkswagen service beforehand is often the best approach.

What does a Volkswagen MOT test include?

At Mon Motors, our Volkswagen approved technicians can carry out standard MOT tests — this will check various aspects of the vehicle, including the brakes, tyres, headlights, windscreen wipers and seatbelts.

At the end of the MOT test, a vehicle will either receive a pass or a fail. If the vehicle passes, it’s safe to drive away — be aware that the MOT test might highlight ‘minor’ or ‘advisory’ problems, which will need to be monitored and potentially fixed in the future.

If a vehicle fails an MOT test, the report will state the ‘major’ or ‘dangerous’ faults that led to this verdict. Very often, these will be simple repairs that can be carried out at our VW dealerships. Not only are repairs carried out by Volkswagen-approved technicians, but we also use genuine VW parts and offer a two-year warranty on these. What’s more, there are 0% finance options available if you’d like to spread the costs.

What happens if my car passes its MOT?

Once your vehicle passes its MOT, you’ll be issued with a VT20 certificate. This document acts as proof that the test was completed and that your car met the required standards on the day.

It also shows the deadline for your next MOT, which must be carried out within the following 12 months. The result is logged on the national MOT database as well, so the pass is recorded electronically for future reference.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

During an MOT inspection, any issues found on your vehicle are classified as minor, major or dangerous. Major and dangerous defects automatically lead to an MOT failure. Minor issues won’t cause a fail, but they will be listed on your MOT certificate as advisories, and it’s up to you to keep an eye on them and arrange repairs when needed.

If your vehicle fails its MOT, you shouldn’t continue driving it. Using a car that has failed due to a dangerous defect can lead to a fine of up to £2,500, three penalty points and even a driving ban.

When a car fails because of major faults, those problems must be fixed before you can legally drive it again. You are, however, allowed to drive the vehicle to a garage for the necessary repairs. If you took the MOT early and your current certificate is still valid, you can continue driving in the meantime - but the faults still need to be repaired and the car must pass a retest to obtain a new certificate.

If the failure is due to dangerous defects, the vehicle cannot be driven at all until the issues are resolved. Once your existing MOT certificate expires, you’ll need a new pass certificate before the car is considered roadworthy or legal to use.
