The story of Mon Motors
Mon Motors is a family-run business with a proud history dating back to 1971, when it was founded by Jeff and Mary Cleverly as a taxi and minibus hire company before expanding into coach travel under the name Capitol Coaches. Over the past five decades, we’ve evolved into one of the largest and most trusted automotive dealer groups in South Wales and the West of England.
Now under the leadership of their son Gavin, our Managing Director, we remain true to the family values Mon Motors was founded on - a dedication to delivering exceptional service and building lasting relationships with our customers.
Today, we represent a wide range of leading automotive brands, including Audi, CUPRA, SEAT, Škoda, Ford, Ford Commercial Vehicles, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volvo. Our dealerships are conveniently located across key areas including Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, and Weston-super-Mare, with some still carrying the Capitol name in honour of our origins.

Where it all started
The Mon Motors Story
Early beginnings
Mon Motors is founded as a local taxi and minibus hire company by Jeff and Mary Cleverly, laying the foundations for what would become one of the UK’s leading automotive groups.
Expansion into coaches
The company acquires a small coach business named Capitol, marking the start of its expansion into broader transport services.
First dealership acquired
Mon Motors enters the motor retail sector with the purchase of a Vauxhall dealership in Cwmbran. Initially acquired to secure additional parking space, the site soon revealed its potential, marking the beginning of Mon Motors’ journey in the automotive industry.
Ford joins the Group
The group expands its brand portfolio by acquiring Cwmbran Ford, strengthening its presence in South Wales.
Capitol Volkswagen Opens
Capitol Volkswagen opens in Merthyr Tydfil, introducing the Volkswagen brand to the business.
Focus shifts to retail
Mon Motors acquires Ford dealerships in Newport, Chepstow, and Brecon, extending its coverage across the region.
Audi comes to Cardiff
The group is awarded the Audi franchise in Cardiff, marking a move into premium vehicle retailing. Based on Hadfield Road, it laid the foundations for the group’s long-standing partnership with the Audi brand.
Newport Ford development
The Newport Ford site undergoes major redevelopment, creating a modern showroom and servicing environment.
Škoda joins the group
Mon Motors is awarded the Škoda franchise in Newport, continuing its commitment to customer choice and brand diversity.
Cardiff Audi relocates
Cardiff Audi moves to a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility at Cardiff Gate Business Park to better serve its growing customer base.
Expansion into the South West
Mon Motors acquires Bath Audi and Bath Volkswagen, significantly expanding into the South West of England.
Bristol Audi Acquired
The group strengthens its Audi presence by acquiring Bristol Audi.
TPS Cardiff awarded
Trade Parts Specialist (TPS) Cardiff is awarded to Mon Motors, enhancing its aftersales support to independent repairers.
TPS Bristol awarded
The TPS network continues to grow with the addition of TPS Bristol.
SEAT comes to Newport
Mon Motors is awarded the SEAT franchise in Newport, bringing another exciting brand into its portfolio.
Bath Volkswagen refurbishment
The Bath Volkswagen showroom is refurbished, delivering an improved retail experience for customers.
Capitol Škoda Newport refurbished

Cardiff Audi refurbished

TPS Cardiff relocates to a new site in Taff’s Well, offering enhanced logistics and service capabilities.

Mon House opens
Mon House opens in Chepstow as a state-of-the-art vehicle preparation and accident repair centre. Equipped with the latest technology, it supports growing vehicle sales across the group while delivering high quality manufacturer approved repairs and bodywork services.
Swansea PartsPlus acquired
Mon Motors acquires Swansea PartsPlus, expanding its Ford trade parts operation across South Wales.
Volvo franchise awarded
Mon Motors is awarded the Volvo franchise, a temporary showroom is established at Hadfield Road, Cardiff.
Cardiff Volvo construction begins
Construction begins on a new, state-of-the-art Volvo showroom in Cardiff to support the growing interest in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Heritage Automotive acquired
Mon Motors acquires Heritage Automotive, expanding its presence and influence across the South West of England. The acquisition includes sites in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol, and Weston-super-Mare, strengthening the group’s representation of Audi, Škoda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles SEAT and CUPRA. TPS Shrewsbury is also acquired.
Cardiff Volvo opens at Cardiff Business Park
A new purpose built Cardiff Volvo showroom opens in Cardiff Business Park, next to Cardiff Audi. The site offers a modern space to explore the latest Volvo models, featuring improved facilities and state-of-the-art equipment.
Cwmbran Ford closes
After 35 years as a valued part of the group, the Cwmbran Ford dealership closes its doors. This strategic move supports the continued investment in the expanded and modernised Newport Ford site, allowing Mon Motors to deliver an even higher level of service and convenience to customers in the region.
CUPRA & SEAT Bristol refurbished
Our CUPRA & SEAT dealership in Bristol undergoes refurbishment aligning with new brand standards to create a modern and premium environment, matching CUPRA & SEAT Gloucester.
