What’s the difference between Audi electric & plug-in hybrid cars?

While we often talk about electric and plug-in hybrid cars at the same time, there are clear differences between these two fuel types.

Audi electric cars are also referred to as all-electric or fully electric, which explains it perfectly. Electric Vehicles – EVs – are powered only by an electric motor and battery; there’s no engine, which means zero tailpipe emissions.

An Audi plug-in hybrid has an electric motor and battery but also a combustion engine, too. The battery in a plug-in hybrid has much smaller capacity than an all-electric Audi. As an example, the A3 Sportback TFSI E has a maximum range of 88 miles*; when driving, the electric battery is used until it runs out of range and then the petrol engine takes over.

Why buy an Audi electric or hybrid car?

Buying an electric Audi, or a plug-in hybrid Audi, has become increasingly popular in recent years. The range and number of different available models has expanded, with Audi now offering all-electric and PHEV versions of some of its most successful cars.

Fully-electric ranges have increased too– the  latest A6 Sportback e-tron has a maximum range of up to 463 miles* – and performance is impressive; this same model can clock 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds.

Driving experience aside, there are other positive reasons for choosing one of the Audi’s electric or hybrid cars. Once purchased, the running costs of an electric car can be lower compared to a petrol or diesel car, especially if you can charge from home and benefit from widely available low-cost energy tariffs. Even though a plug-in hybrid still requires fuel, with the electric battery capable of covering shorter journeys there’s a probability you’ll need to refuel less often.

Electric cars need less maintenance too, with fewer parts to service and a reduction in potential repairs. If you drive an all-electric or hybrid, you might also be exempt from congestion charges in city centre Clean Air Zones; both Bath and Bristol have these, and so does London (ULEZ).

Charging your electric Audi

Charging an Audi electric car is simple. If you’ve never driven an EV before it might seem daunting but it’s really no different to refuelling a petrol car – instead of plugging in a nozzle at a service station to add fuel, you plug a cable in, instead, to recharge.

Recharging an electric car does take longer than filling up with petrol or diesel. How long it takes depends on two main factors. How much charge are you adding to the car (is the battery at 25% or at 60% and just needs topping up?) And also, the speed and power output of the charger you’re using.

Many EV chargers at service stations are fast or even rapid chargers, so they’ll charge quickly (but will be more expensive), whereas if you have a wallbox charger at home it will take longer but you can benefit from off-peak electricity prices from your energy provider.

How much does charging an Audi electric car cost?

The cost of charging Audi electric cars will always vary. As we’ve explained, the type of charger you use has an impact on price; a rapid EV charger at a motorway service station will cost more than a chargepoint you’ve had installed at home that you may use overnight for several hours, especially if you have a dedicated EV tariff, where the price per kWh can be as little as 7p.

The battery’s capacity is a factor, too. Charging from nearly empty to 100% on an Audi car with a maximum range of 400 miles, for example, will cost more than an EV with a 250-mile range. Charging an all-electric car will be more expensive than a plug-in hybrid Audi, as a hybrid has a smaller battery.

Is an all-electric Audi or a plug-in hybrid model best for me?

There’s no definitive answer to this one – it really comes down to personal preference.

If you want to drive on pure electric power and have no reliance on fuel at all, a fully-electric car is your choice. For drivers who mainly have shorter journeys and commutes, an all-electric model can fit perfectly with your motoring lifestyle – while still having the range for longer drives when charged sufficiently.

If you still want to retain the option of a petrol engine, driving in pure electric mode when the battery is powered up, an Audi hybrid model might be better for you.

All electric or plug-in hybrid – both are brilliant options.
