Preparing your Audi for its MOT

How to prepare your Audi for an MOT

When you’ve made your Audi MOT booking, it’s worth carrying out a few simple checks before bringing your car in. While this won’t guarantee your Audi will pass its MOT, checking components of your vehicle that you know will be inspected during the test can reduce the chances of the car failing.

Your Audi could sometimes fail its MOT because of a relatively minor issue that can be easily resolved before bringing the car in for its test. To help avoid that, carry out these simple checks at home first. If you notice anything that isn’t quite right, it may be best to book an Audi service first.

  • Test the horn
  • Make sure all seatbelts work correctly
  • Check fluid levels – oil, coolant, and windscreen washer fluid – and top up if needed
  • Ensure your Audi's number plates are clean and digits clearly readable
  • Inspect windscreen wiper blades to confirm they’re in good condition and not split
  • Check tyre tread depth and overall condition

What does an Audi MOT test include?

An Audi MOT is a standard inspection of a vehicle, and required by law on all cars aged three years and older. If you’ve just bought a brand new Audi, it won’t need an MOT for another three years, but an Approved Used Audi might be due sooner.

An MOT test is the same for every model of car, so an Audi is tested the same as a Volkswagen, for example. It’s done to ensure a vehicle meets safety standards and is still roadworthy. During an MOT, a Technician will carry out a series of checks, including:

  • Headlights
  • Brakes
  • Windscreen wipers
  • Tyres, including tread depth
  • Indicators
  • Horn
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Emissions from the exhaust

If any of the areas checked aren’t in correct working order, your Audi could fail its MOT. Other components may not fail but could be recorded as ‘advisory’ which means you, the driver, need to monitor them for further damage and likely replace or repair them in advance of the following year’s MOT. A good example of an advisory item might be a tyre showing tread wear, but not sufficient enough to be below the legal level.

How much does an Audi MOT cost?

The standard cost of an MOT for a car, with up to 8 passenger seats, is £54.85. Included in this price is a free vehicle health check for your Audi, plus a wash and vac.

What happens if my Audi passes its MOT?

If your Audi passes its MOT, good news. You’ll receive a test certificate – called a VT20 – as confirmation and are good to drive away. Your MOT is valid for the next 12 months. You can book the next MOT up to a month, minus a day, before it runs out.

We’ll also notify you when your MOT is due, so you can quickly and conveniently arrange your MOT appointment with us.

What happens if my Audi fails its MOT?

If your Audi fails its MOT, you can’t drive it again until those faults have been repaired, and the vehicle has been re-tested. Not all faults result in a fail; faults and defects are categorised as minor, major or dangerous. Minor faults will be logged and must be monitored in case they need repairing at a later date – this is your responsibility to do so.

Major or dangerous faults mean an MOT failure. Driving after your car has failed its MOT can result in a fine and penalty points on your license – you can only drive your car to a garage for the required repairs. Of course, if you book an Audi MOT with Mon Motors, we can carry out the repairs needed so you won’t need to go anywhere else.
